What manual transmissions were in the 1st gen ram?
I might be picking up a 92 d150 (2wd) with a 5.2 soon. Only prob is its auto and I want a manual.
I'm willing to do the work to swap in a manual (especially now that I have a steady flow of cash coming in), and I have shop space to work.
Overdrive is a must. I only drive 3 miles to work, but when I do cruise the freeway, I want to get the most mpg I can. I was thinking of the nv4500, but they seem really expensive, not to mention overkill for my needs. I've heard the nv3500 is ok, but impossible to rebuild. Did any of the 4-speed transmissions have OD?
Lets hear your opinions!

Ya thay made an 833 4sp with 4th an overdrive. I think thay put them in cars in the late 70s or so. Thay did put them in pickups and vans only seen them in 1/2 2wd. Thay dont have a very low first gear in them. Ever drive a "3 on the tree"?
My dads got one in a van with the slant 6 that's going into my W250. Back when he drove it any kinda head wind or hill and it was in 3th gear.
I done a few auto to manual swaps and always had the complete parts truck there when I did it.
My 2 cents. Unless this is one sweet rust free(not a bondo duct tape repaint) truck buy one with the manual in it.
I'm not going to use that 833OD so it will be for sale. But not till Northern Minnesota warms up. If that happens !

I started looking for this generation ram a few months ago. Good, clean, rust free ones are few and far between, especially in my area in wisconsin. I've looked at a couple of these trucks already. Transmissions can be swapped. I'm not gonna pass up one with a clean body because of it.
Gotta take what you can get, ya know?

There is also the np435 which has a granny first gear. The ratios from 2-4 are almost similar as the 1-3 gear ratios in the a833od
I've got the np435 behind my slant. Tough tranny.
Np-435
1st - 6.69:1
2nd - 3.34:1
3rd - 1.66:1
4th - 1:1
Rev - 8.02
A-833 overdrive

Yeah, I would prefer a 5 speed.
I looked at the truck. It was pretty good, but still had a little rust under the rear fenders (it had fender flares), and a small hole under the driver side floor. So far, this is the best truck I've seen, but still I'd rather not have to do any body work at all.. The search continues haha

Watch out for rear gear issues. The autos sometimes came with 323's in 2 wd and that would not work out too well for the 833 tranny. I had one with 355's and it was pretty good in most situations, loaded trying to creep over rough terrain sucked as well as starting out on a slope loaded. It would probably be great with some 392's though. I did get good mileage with it, I was able to get 18.3 towing a VW Jetta from Atlanta to WV. Good Luck with either one.
