Question 1996 Dodge Ram1500 Alternator

i need to replace the alternator in my dodge truck but i got a few questions like first of all how can you find out what ampage alternator is this the number that is mine : TN12000-0470 AND 90HS PLUS IN BIG NUMBERS 8647 so i am wondering is it a 90 AMP because it say 90 hs is that what it means? and i am wondering will it be a bad idea to replace it with a 120 amp if it is a 90 AMP

Welcome to the site. Do not replace with a higher amp number, but you can use a lower amp such as 80 or 70. I will move this thread to the second generation Ram section,

^Psh, bigger is better.

Looking at the 96 factory service manual:
type P/N Rated SAE AMPS Engine Min. Test Amps
DENSO 53008646 81 3.9L/5.2L/5.9L 75
DENSO 53008647 117 3.9L/5.2L/5.9L 90
DENSO 53008651 136 3.9L/5.2L/5.9L 120

Thats your part numbers right there.
I find it interesting how the later trucks came only with 117 and 136 amp alts.

Happy hunting.
