RE: P0463 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input???
at first the fuel gauge wenttotally dead, it dropped to its "off" position when I pulled into a parking lot after I had filled up at a gas station. I checked the OBD code, and started my truck up again and the gauge worked fine, with the exception of the check engine light being on. later I undid the battery, waited 10 minutes, and the code was cleared with no residual check engine light or any gauge troubles. so who knows...

Sounds like the fuel pump is toasted. The fuel level sending unit is part of the fuel pump and it can be replaced separately but it would make more sense just to replace the entire fuel pump assembly. Dealer will charge you probably $500.00 or more to replace it, independent shop maybe charges a little less. You can do it yourself, it's not too hard of a job. You can buy a fuel pump for about $225.00 to $250.00 depending on which parts store you use. I bought mine at Advance, regular price was $220.00, I used an online discount code, bought it on their website and picked it up at their store the same day, and it cost me $180.00.

You can check to be sure the fuel pump is bad. You can buy a cheap fuel pressure gauge at Harbor Freight or maybe an auto parts store. I don't know the fuel pressure specs for a 98 but it's probably listed in the Haynes Book for your truck. You can connect the gauge to the fuel rail under the hood and if the pressure is out of spec, the pump should be replaced.
