Default Fuel Filler Tube 1996

Hi all,

I have to replace my fuel filler tube on my 96 Caravan. Fortunately it looks like an easy swap but the dealer is saying the prices range from $200 to $400. I have to get my VIN number for them to source the correct part. Online aftermarket prices range from $50 to $115.

If a VIN number is needed for the dealer to source the correct part, how can I make sure I order the correct aftermarket part? Anyone done this fix, gone the aftermarket route, and know the differences?

Judging by how rusted mine is I don't expect much success from the wrecking yard.

Thanks!
Rob

Do you have a long wheel base or short wheel base? And did the dealer give a part number?

I have the short wheel base 3.0L. I still have to get my VIN before the dealer can source the correct part and I have to wait until after work to get that. My existing tube appears to have two vent pipes attached if that helps.

I found an old TSB. Did you ever have any recalls done on the van? Because there is one to replace the filler neck assy.

To: All Dodge and Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers
Subject: Safety Recall #665 -- Fuel Filler Tube Rollover Valve and Ground Strap
Models:
1996 Model Year Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan; Plymouth Voyager and Grand Voyager; and Chrysler Town & Country Minivans (NS) Built Through:

• August 9, 1995 (MDH 080910) at the St. Louis Assembly Plant (‘B' in 11th VIN Position)

• August 10, 1995 (MDH 081018) at the Windsor Assembly Plant (‘R' in 11th VIN Position)

The fuel tank rollover valve on the above listed vehicles, may allow liquid fuel to pass into the vapor canister under certain circumstances. Also, an electro-static charge may build up on the filler tube and cause a spark when refueling. Either of these conditions create the potential for a vehicle fire. To correct these conditions, the fuel tank filler tube must be replaced with a filler tube which incorporates a third rollover valve and a ground strap. Also, the fuel tank vent hoses must be rerouted.

I bought the van used and the dealer I go to didn't find any outstanding recalls. The existing filler tube does in fact have a ground strap so I guess it has been done. Too bad, it could have been a free fix:-(
