Taking the ole girl in tomorrow to get the rear seal put in the transmission. I wish I had time to do it myself. I was thinking of having the transmission bands adjusted while I had her in. I change the tranny fluid and filter myself, but I've always been afraid of those bands. I talked to a guy at the shop and he said more or less if you adjust bands and it helps something else is going on in the transmission. This sounded odd to me, but he gave me a decent explanation about how the coating on the band is very thin and not something that needs adjustment. I know what the service manuals say, but I want some real world wisdom from you fellas. My truck runs great and the transmission is fine and I usually subscribe to the don't fix it if it aint broken mentality. Any advice on what to do here?
IMHO, if the service manual calls for it then it should be done. I take my truck in to a local transmission shop for fluid changes and always request the bands be adjusted.
That is usually the way I see it. I guess I'm just wary because it is the transmission and the horror stories I've read about the bands being adjusted the wrong way. Wasn't it PurplDodge who roasted his tranny adjusting the bands? With this mechanic saying he doesn't recommend adjusting the bands, do you think I should take it somewhere else? He may not be the best if he doesn't recommend that service.
Sorry to bring up bad memories. I'll go kick a harbor freight employee and say that was from PurplDodge if it makes you feel better! I'm guessing though you felt it was important to adjust the bands though?

Yes I do think it is important to adjust them, along with changing your fluid.
Dont kick the employees, just melt all their crappy tools.
for peace of mind, we should adjust the bands regularly. when I let mine run a lot of miles without servicing, starts to make things that scare me. then I change fluid, filter, adjust the bands and runs like new. ( almost hitting 17000 with the stock one, and engine too )
