Default Crankshaft Position Sensor Tricks???

Hey everyone,

I have a '99 Stratus ES, 2.5 Mitsu V6 and I was told by the guy I bought it from that his mechanic said it needs a new crank position sensor.

Went and bought the new sensor, located it on the bell housing, and hit this problem:

There is no way a man with normal sized arms and fingers and reach this thing to change it. It's way back in there, and even though I can feel it if I slide way under the car I'm not going to change it blind.

Is there any trick to getting this thing out or am I going to have to return my sensor, sucker up and pay a mechanic?

I didn't have any problems with adjusting mine. I did it from under the car when It was on a hoist.

I had mine up on ramps and could only feel it by reaching around the bell housing and differential. No real way to "see" it...I can see the wire, but I can't access the screw to the actual sensor. Tried going in from the driver's side wheel well also but the darn thing is just too far away.

The best way from the top, is remove the dist cap to gain access to the sensor.

That makes sense. I originally wasn't sure if removing the cap would make it any easier or not. Thanks for the tip! I'll tackle this sometime this week and replace the distributor cap while I'm at it--gives me a good excuse to do so.

Any other suggestions still appreciated!

Default 2.5 crankshaft sensor replacement

Shop manual says you only need to remove the servo on shock tower. I tried that and I still cant see it. I will remove dist again to try to gain access. If I cant I will have to take it to a mechanic.

Default 2000 crankshaft sensor

Wow what a job that was. No way to do it without taking the distributor off. I had to remove driver side wheel and use 12" extension to reach the bolt that fastens the sensor.

Alas it was all for naught too.
