Default Please help with emission failure 1995 Ram 1500

I have a 1995 Ram 1500 2 wheel drive with the 5.2 engine. It failed the test with high HC and high NOx, the catalytic converter and O2 sensers are good. The truck runs good, no hesitation during acceleration, never stalls, and idles smoothly. I cannot afford to take it to a garage for repairs it may or may not need. Please give me some advice as to what troubleshooting I can do my self first. I am thinking PVC valve and/or EGR valve. The timing feels ok. Any input will be appreciated.

Get a PCV valve from the dealer. Less than 10 bucks.

Read the Plenum thread stickied at the top of this forum. If yours hasn't been fixed yet, it is probably (past) time.

Check fuel pressure.......

Default About the emission results

The test verified the O2 sensor was good and the catalytic converter was good... I manually checked the cc and knew it was good before test.

The test means nothing, I've done tons of E tests on o2's(and a new one solved the problem). And how did you "manually" check the CC ? One other thing, you also stated that your "o2 senors" are good(plural) a 95 only has one?

Default Old school way to check catalytic converter

Yes you will laugh....but I checked the catalytic converter by parking on some high grass and watching for smoke....then I used an oven thermometor and verified that the temperature at the outlet was higher than at the inlet....Also, the emissions test verified the catalytic converter and O2 sensor to be good. Yes, I know I only have one O2 sensor.

How old is the O2 sensor? How many miles on the truck? Has the plenum been fixed? (that would be something I would check immediately, if you are burning oil from a blown plenum, you will NEVER pass the sniffer test.)
