Default Shift on the Fly

My 99 Ram's RPOs says it has Shift on the fly. How does this work? We had a snow storm already and i had to use 4x4 so i tried it out. It would shift out of 4x4 back into 2H. But if i tried shifting back into 4x4 while moving it would grind and not go into the 4x4. Is there something wrong? Or something I'm not understanding/Missing. First time i've had a car/truck with 4x4 let alone having the Shift on the Fly option.

Shift on the fly will work at speeds up to 55 mph but i wouldnt recommend it. When going down the road just let off the gas and pull it back into 4hi in a swift motion without hesitation. Same process to go out of 4hi. Just let off the gas and push it back up into 2 wheel with stopping or hesitating.

So i guess the grinding/refusal to get into 4H meant i wasn't pulling it back quick enough?

Thanks man.

Ya might try shifting the transmission into neutral before reaching for the transfer case shifter.
