I have a 2004 dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel automatic that has just started experiencing shifting problems. I bought the truck when it had 60k miles on it, it now has 116,000. The truck tows a 7x16 trailer with a couple mowers often, as well as some snow plowing in the winter.

The problem seems to be shifting out of 1st gear. Out of the blue it started to act up...It doesn't want to shift into second gear, when it warms up however it will shift into 2nd gear but at a higher RPM than usual (2500rpm +) I don't known if it has trouble getting from 2nd to 3rd, Im afraid to take it out on the highway and its hard to get up to that speed on the road in my town. Sometimes it will shift in to 2nd gear when I completely let off of the accelerator.

To be honest, I think the tranny fluid has only been changed once. Im taking it in tomorrow to hopefully get figured out and fixed but I wanted to see what yall thought. I did a lot of research about this problem and it seems to be a problem for a lot of people but if anyone else can shed some light on this Id appreciate it greatly. Hopefully there isn't anything wrong mechanically with the trans, hopefully its electronic or something simple.

Have you changed transmission fluid/filter and adjusted the bands? Changing/adjusting these things first would be where I would start. You are supposed to be doing this stuff every 30k.

 

The problem with mine was the governor pressure solenoid and pressure sensor. It's a really easy fix I found directions on fixing it on here somewhere.

After replacing those two things, the truck shifts great.

 

Ill stick to my manual never liked automatics really lol
