Default OEM security system

I have a 99 durango. Today after work, I attempted to get in my truck from the passenger side. Open the door, reached for the glove box and all of a sudden my horn starts honking out of nowhere along with the red security light blinkinh off and on. Now, i had no clue that my durango had a security system on it. I dont have the factory key fob, rather a replacement key from wally world i would assume. So i tried starting the vehicle, it started then immediately shut off. Tried once more, same outcome. So i popped the hood open, pulled the negative cable, put it back on and it stopped. Went to attempt to start again, it honked twice really fast then i was able turn the durango on and make my way home withou lt any further problems.

Not sure how to diagnose this or know if this is a problem. Any help would great.

The quick honk is a indicator that the system was set off and you should check to see if anything is missing. Were the other doors locked and the passenger side didn't so when you opened it, it thought that someone broke in?

im not going to lie i dont see how you would forget unlocking it sinc ei have never seen a durango with a keyhole in the passenger door, only in the drivers side and the liftgate, if you just walked up to the truck and opened the door you either unlocked it with the remote (doubtful since that would disable the alarm) it wasnt locked (doubtful since then the alarm wouldnt have been set) that door just never locked, or you unlocked it with the key from the drivers door and unlocked the passenger door from inside.

i believe you sharps. i just looked up pictures of the different years and it looks like 98 and 99 did have keyholes on the passenger side.. 2000 seems to be the year they made all the little changes. i know that if you unlock the car from the drivers side that it dissables the alarm, dont think doing the same from the passenger side does.

hmm, my 99 has a keyhole as well. I know the feeling mega, my alarm likes to go off randomly when I unlock the drivers door with the key (I don't have the FOB either). Then again my security alarm is stupid, It likes to blink intermittently and doesn't ALWAYS turn off when I reset the alarm via drivers door with key. The Start-up/shut-down is the alarm system disabling the truck from moving.

next time (if it happens) shut the passenger door, go over to the drivers door and use the key to lock the truck then unlock it, it will reset the alarm.

I had to reset mine after the vice principal helped me break in after locking my keys in. I pulled the battery negative, locked all the doors by hand then reconnected the battery and used the key in the drivers door. Been working ever since.
