I would read through this thread to see whats possible. You may not be able to go much larger but you can at least increase the clamping force.

Thanks, spschultz, for that suggestion and link. I have read that entire thread and contacted Brandon regarding the 4x4 kit. Nice guy. I suppose there are lots of ways to improve the stock braking system and larger rotors are only one way. My truck came with 15 inch wheels and when I up-sized, I forgot that 16's were also a "stock" size. I've kicked myself a few times for going to only 16 when 18's werent that much more expensive. Anyway, thanks for the replies.

I think
I think just making sure your stock braking system is in tip top condition with a few improvements like better rotors and pads with new flex lines is a better way.
When you start modifying stock parts things can get dicey and unpredictable not to mention getting replacement parts for your monkeyed brakes.

New flex lines like... stainless steel? eliminate the rubber lines? what constitutes better rotors and pads? Is there such a thing as better calipers without going nuts? I think a 2 piston caliper would be good. how much better braking does a rear disc conversion accomplish? lots of questions, I know. Thanks for your help.

The flex lines on the truck if never replace they should be replaced not too $$ about $22 a side get rebuilt calipers.
I have never tried these but for the price not bad New Dimpled and slotted Black zinc-plated rotors http://www.ebay.com/itm/Front-Pair-Set-2-Brake-Disc-New-Dimpled-and-slotted-Black-zinc-plated-Auto-/360381360646?fits=Makeodge|Modelakota|Year:199 8&hash=item53e8672a06&item=360381360646&pt=Motors_ Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr
Then grab a good set of pads I suggest semi metallic not ceramic.
Check your rear brake cylinders they are probably in poor shape new are only $15 a side and new shoes are only $30 to $45 a set.
