Question 5.9 V8 Fuel Mileage

I have a 5.9 V8 in a 1998 Dodge 2500. As far as I can tell I'm getting somewhere around 10 mpg, is that average or should it be getting better than that? The engine is stock right now but what are some things to do to get the fuel mileage a little better?

thats pretty average. anything that reduces the drag on the engine will help get better mpg's. things like an electric fan, i've heard underdrive pulleys can help, and keeping your foot out of it will all help out. some say that CAI's help to get better miles but im not sure on that one since the engine is going to add more fuel due to the extra air.

you are right on par, my old half ton 5.9 got about 12-13 so you are on track with 10 mpg on a 3/4

I get 10 in my half Ton. But my half ton does 3/4 Ton things.

Because its awesome

Don't get dual exhaust that's loud, you'll get awful gas mileage becaus of it

I'm looking for a new exhaust because right now its just stock and is way to quiet, I've been looking around and found one from LMC Truck that is a Cat-Back Dual with Resonator Tips that replace the muffler. It claims to that it provides better low end torque and better fuel economy

The single best thing you can do it take the fan clutch and fan off, and add electric fans. After that I can say 180* t-stat cooler spark plugs and a cai helped mine a bunch oh check the plenum too.
I have a 1500 2wd quad cab 8'bed and get 17mpg with a 5.9

I got 14 with my truck strictly around town when I had 33's and 3.55's. That's with a stick, but also a high mileage motor that has to work pretty hard to push this thing around. Now I have 35's, and haven't regeared yet. I haven't filled up yet (probably later today) but I assume I will see a drop, especially since my speedo hasn't been corrected.
