Default How to properly engage/disengage 4 wheel drive low range?

I used 4 wheel drive low for the first time this week and had trouble getting back to 2wd without a horrible grinding noise. I finally turned off the engine and shifted back to 2wd fine. I've only had my truck a few months and this is my first 4 wheel drive vehicle I don't have an owners manual either. Can anyone tell me the proper way to engage/disengage 4 wheel drive low? 4 high seems to engage/disengage without drama.

Thanks,

Truck in neutral and one swift fast motion, sometimes I shut mine off too. Dont do it without disengaging the engine from drivetrain. Going into 4hi you can just go to an idle speed or stop and swift pull into 4hi

you can shift from 2 HI to 4 HI by simply pulling/pushing the lever one notch. its shift on the fly in any gear.

2 HI to 4 LO is a little more complicated. there are no syncronizers, and you must not pause in t-case neutral. so what you do is stop (or rolling at 1-2 mph), shift to transmission-neutral, and then shove the t-case shifter as hard and fast as you can to your gear position and do not pause in t-case neutral.

if you do pause - your stuck. turn ignition off, finish the shift, and restart the truck. no need to sit there and grind gears because its not going to engage.

when you check fluid, be aware that the inside hex key size is 10mm, NOT 3/8 which will strip it out. sometimes its tighter than dick's hatband, so do yourself a couple of favors -

loosen (or strip out) the fill plug first to make sure that SOB is coming out - before you open the drain plug.

when reinstalling plugs, use a little liquid teflon, or rtv, or antiseize to lube the threads, and just barely snug the plugs. don't torque them like they hold the truck together.
