Yeah I know that method and I have done that and it is accurate to about a half a mile on the avg miles per gallon mode however the distance to empty mode lies a lot my buddy with the v8 does not have the trip computer and he gets around 12 to 13 mpg city where my truck before i removed the clutch fan would get 16 to 17 city these are real numbers for his and my vehicle and his I know when I first was looking into getting a Dakota I was between the v6 and v8 and I like to drive fast and i like having power on tap but ultimately could not afford crap mpg and everyone i talked to about the v8s that owned one said that they get crap mpg so I went for the v6 this is my second one same motor the first was a 92 which had 212000 on it when i bought it I owned it three years and sold it with 290500 on it and that man is still driving it around and working it to death it now has over 350000 on it original motor rebuilt trans so when i went to buy another Dakota I knew I wanted the v6 my 01 had 179000 when I bought it over a year and a half ago it now has 205000 as we know our trucks has crap automatics and three days after I bought it the torque converter died so I replaced the trans I have hauled motors and scrap and pulled cars on trailers this motor has plenty of power and gets better mileage and I would buy ten more just like it if I could I would love the v8 but cant afford to feed it

this is what i am currently getting for city miles
city mpg
over all miles traveled
my truck has 205000 miles on it I used to get 17.3 city and now after the clutch fan delete I get 18.8 I am going to do a tune up with high performance coil, wires, cap, rotor and plugs. I will post more pics of mpg if it changes any after that ... at some point I would like to get the k&n air intake and v8 tb and jbl headers

So if you do that math that you clam to do, your tank is 34 gallons, looks like someone forgot to reset it!

Old post is a bit old, but seems to be alive... Original post is 9 years old ;p but I may as well toss in my experience for others.
Highest I've hit is 19.7MPG with about 70% highway, however, I average 18MPG with my daily commute, which is about 60/40 Highway/City. I've only gotten under 16 when I'm doing maintenance, lots of idle, lots of WOT, lots of short trips to the parts store. I'm not entirely soft on the right pedal, usually run 75MPH on the interstate, and if I can get away with it, I like to hit it a bit hard around corners to get that break loose shimmy (when the intersection is empty) just to give the butt dyno something to think about...
