Positive battery cable is toast due to the ignition feed being welded onto to stater terminal nut. Found this while changing my oil pump. Looks like someone did not tighten it properly and it must have beeen arcing. Replacements are listed at $200.00 + anyone know why so expensive?. Any reason I cannot just solder on another terminal. Terminal looked diferent than others I an used to seeing. Some kind of special resistance terminal? Thanx in advance for the help

 

Just the cable from the battery to the motor bay fuse case? You've got to be ****ting me. It's all of maybe... 2' long?

Just get some raw copper, and solder the old terminals right onto the new one... presuming I am thinking of the right thing.

 

The terminal that is fried is the ignition lead, the skinny wire, that is attached to the starter's small terminal by a small nut. All this is at the starter end of the positive cable. Anyone know if there are any special ballasts or resistors involved with this. The termianal that is friedhas a little gray block of plastic next to it. Is this some high dollar resistor. I am lost with electrical. Thanx in advance.

 

Is the grey box fried, or does it have information on it?

I think there are resistors in the way of starters typically. Resistors are damn cheap though. It's just a matter of determining the value of the resistor. Do you have a multimeter?

 

here is a picture of the fried resistor/ballast I stand corrected it is black not gray numbers on it are

not really good pictures but you can see the terminal with nut on the right end and the cover/housing for the ballast/resistor a piece of carbon graphite looking material about 3/4 of an inch long 1/16 th of an inch thick and 1/4 of an inch wide fell out any recommendations or help much appreciated Dealer quoted $256.00 for the cable and you cannot just order the ballast alone imagine that Thanx in advance

 

Disregard. Went to a shop that rebuilds starters and alternators and boss man said that allthe plastic is just a fancy wire seperator. No ballast/resistors at all. He said crimp on another quality terminal loop right size gauge and make sure the wires are kept seperated. Problem solved. $256.00 for a regular cable with a fancy wire seperator from the stealership!! Lesson learned check everything well before trying to disassemble! Still do not know where the graphite looking stuff came from - maybe from the starter being banged around and dropped out??!Thanx for the quick responses.
