true 4x4 is where you have a transfer case and have the ability to put it into mechanical 4wd by pulling a lever or turning a knob. true 4x4 is where there is a fixed amount of power going to the front wheels and a fixed amount going to the rear wheels. (usually 50/50) you know that you have true 4x4 if you are not sposed to drive it on dry roads and for 99% of driving, you keep it in 2wd.
awd however is a different animal... most of the time it is computer controled and is on all the time (think subaru, etc) with this setup, all 4 wheels are always being driven (sometimes there is a front or rear wheel bias) and with awd, you have the ability move the power around, for instance in perfect conditions it might be split 95/5 front to rear and has the ability to move to say 50/50 from computer calculations...
on your 4x4 switch on your dash, do you have it say 2wd 4x4 hi 4x4 lo or awd 4x4 hi 4x4 lo...
also if you want to see ify ou ahve a lsd, check your glove box, which should have all the information (rear axle ratio, lsd option or not, etc)

I know what true 4x4 is, i guess what i meant to ask is if the front axle is locked. When my tires start spinning in snow and in 4wd, will 2 tires be spinning (front left, right rear) or will all 4 have power to them.
Not to mention won't both rear tires spin if it has a LSD?

So you're saying although I may have not a LSD I should still have all 4 wheels spinning?
I looked in the glove box and for rear axle it says corporate 9? I did not see anything saying LSD or anything even saying it had a open rear end(not sure if there is a technical name for it).

then my guess is that you do not have an LSD... i will check my truck in a minute but i could have sworn that mine did in fact say LSD, if yours did not, than i would assume that you dont... and in regard to your first question, i don't know i know that if you do have an LSD all four wheels will spin but w/out one i couldn't tell you for sure
anyone else know?
