Default 1998 Dakota Towing Capacity

Hey guys I have a Dakota 1998 4WD with a 5.2 Magnum V8 and an automatic trans with a 3.92 rear end & 6' bed. Never had the truck set up for towing anything but want to start towing a small enclosed trailer 6' X 12' and not heavily loaded. Will I have problems towing this trailer with the truck I have.

nah man you should be fine. My truck ('06 dak, 4.7, 4x4, 3.92 rear, auto tranny, trx, tow package) pulls right around 5000lbs quite regularly with no issues. If it's windy you might notice a bit of drag on the enclosed trailers since they pull fairly hard to begin with but I'm sure you'll be just fine

Have the 3.92 rear end but no trans cooler. When I purchased the truck I didn't have any desire to pull a trailer. I have to get a trailering package put on.

Last weekend my friends 98 3.9 5 speed 4x4 pulled a 20 foot double axle trailer with a 1,000lb yamaha rhino and a 475lb suzuki ltr 450. Pull it fine only problem was the trailer needs rewired for trailer brakes so you needed to brake early that was the only issue. Depending if your going to tow a lot or tow for a long distance I would look into a trans cooler.

I've got a similar truck. Look underneath the rear bumper and see if the factory trailering recepticle is there- should be 7 wire spade. Will be under qa little flapper door.
Truck won't even know that you are pulling anything. Trans cooler is a good idea if none is in front of the AC condensor. I got lucky-bought mine used and it has the trailer pkg.

Thanks much guys will definitely look into getting a trans cooler for my truck. Can anyone suggest any hop ups for this truck. 5.2 Magnum, automatic 3.92 rear end, 4WD. I figured a cat back exhaust and K&N cold air package but don't know how much performance I'd pick up.

Most tests that I have read state that you gain nothing with cold-air induction and high flow exhaust with your engine. Just more noise, especially under the hood...you will sacrifice some gas mileage too.
