Default SEAT PROBLEM 40/20/40 back rest wont stay up

bought me 1997 dokato club cab from a very large couple and the drivers side back rest would fall back when pressure was applied to it. i decided to replace it with one out of a junkyard few month after i bought it. only to have the replacement do the same thing. I took my original sets apart and the ram/cylinder was riveted to the saet frame. has any one had this problem and is ther an easy fix for this.
