Default Transmission Help - Band adjustment.

2002 dak 3.9 auto 4wd 102k
I drained the fluid and took off the pan and filter.
I wanted to adjust the bands according to my haynes book this is a 46RE
Have you ever done this? Does the band adjustment inside the tranny control 1st to 2nd gear - it's referred to as low speed - reverse.
What does the adjuster OUTside the transmission case control? Advice?
Now for my Biggest question - IN the pan near the bottom of the magnet was a circlip! ANY IDEA ALL WHERE THAT GOES?
Do any of you have a schematic that would help me determine if the clip is a spare during assembly that fell in or one that belongs someplace in my tranny?

its a 42re.. the 46re sits behind the 5.9s.... that snap ring is probably one of the rings from one of the clutch packs that broke off. our transmissions are garbage. just throw it out. personally id get rid of that haynes manual and atleast get a chilton.. better off with the factory on to give you proper adjustment procuedure and specs.

Default Whoops - Can anyone double check me on these settings?

Fox it is actually an e-clip. I just watched Transgo's shift kit install video and they show an e-clip holding a manual lever in place above the valve body.

1.Would you agree this is the place for the clip I have?

2. The haynes manual says the 42re is the one they use with a 4 cylinder the 6 cylinder gets the 46re and the 46rfe goes in the v8 (4.7L)
- Are you saying that's incorrect?

The adjustment is: 2 7/8 turns cw for the front and 2 turns cw for the low-rear after tightening to 72 inch pounds which I assume is 6 foot pounds.

3. In the above video they said to do the adjustment bolts 'snug' with a small wrench; and then back them out the specified amount. -- I can't really read my old style beam torque wrench whilst contorting myself under the tranny. Would it be alright to skip the torque wrench and do it the Transgo method?

Can any of you fellas help me with this?
I have it apart in the driveway and need it to run this weekend.

i had a piece of metal in my trans pan when I changed the fluid in my trans. It was later diagnosed to be part of the overdrive snap ring. I couldnt find my damn torque wrench, so I never messed with the bands. If you're not having shifting problems, then you're supposed to just leave the bands alone.

from my understand, the 4 bangers came only with the 5 speed stick.. the 3.9 v6's came with 42re. the 5.2 v8s sometimes came with a 42re, most of the time 44re. the 5.9 v8 came with the 46re. the 4.7 v8s come with the 45rfe in our gen trucks.

haynes manuals are garbage IMHO. ive experienced one for a 96 dakota, an 87 for f150, a 93 ram, and so on.. youre better off using it as toilet paper and go get a more credible shop manual like i mentioned above. nothing BUT trouble with them.

Default thanks fox

I've done a little more snooping and I believe you're correct.
It does appear to be 42re.

As for the bands I have already loosened the low reverse adjustment.
One of the other posters has listed the adjustment specs here and my manual agrees. Thanks for the heads up on the Haynes book. I agree with you. Not as reliable; esp. in this case.

Quad cab318 posted the info below - Fox does your book bear these out?

yes the 42re has two bands, yes you should adjust them

here are the adjustments

FRONT BAND
The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw is
located on the left side of the transmission case
above the manual valve and throttle valve levers.
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut (Fig. 64).
Then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting
screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw
threads if necessary.
(3) Tighten band adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in.
lbs.) torque with Inch Pound Torque Wrench
C-3380-A, a 3-in. extension and appropriate Torxâ„¢
socket.
(4) Back off front band adjusting screw 3 turns.
(5) Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten
locknut to 41 N·m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
(6) Lower vehicle.
REAR BAND
The transmission oil pan must be removed for
access to the rear band adjusting screw.
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid.
(3) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns
(Fig. 65). Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in
lever.
(4) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.)
torque.
(5) Back off adjusting screw 4 turns.
(6) Hold adjusting screw in place
