Default 3.7 V6 stumbling issue first and now check engine light is on...

So here are the details.

2004 Dodge Dakota 3.7 V6 Club Cab, 2WD, Manual with just over 60K

Ever since I bought the truck(used at 58K), the engine stumbles a bit below 2K RPM. If I am in any gear doing 1500-1900 RPM and I floor it, the truck stumles like it's misfiring or not firing on all cylinders, and then as it finally crosses 2000 RPM, many seconds later, it's like a switch was hit and power erupts from the motor. I thought this was due to bad spark plugs and air filter, so I replaced the plugs/air filter and while the stumbling did get better, it was still there. I've also noticed that on startup, the truck runs a bit rough(sounds like stumbling or cylinder misses) until the temp comes up a bit and then she smoothes out.

I've been trying to think what could be causing this and I have really no idea.


To make matters a bit worse, my check engine light just went on last week. I drive the truck only as absolutly needed right now until that can be fixed(I'm guessing an O2 sensor), but I'm also not discounting hte two are connected.

Any ideas as to why my truck is stumbling and if this is a common issue?

read everything here first, and give us your code and we will diagnose the problem for you to the best of our ability over the internet. if we need any sort of readings, setc, we will instruct you what to do so you can get them to us. that simple. be very very descriptive when it comes to problems.. makes it easier for us to help you.

im betting one of your coil packs is on its way out. If you come up with a misfire code thats probably what it is.

thank you for the suggestion. I will post the codes up once I get them(about 40 minutes from now).

How long is each coil-pack supposed to last?

I am unable to get the codes to display...

I followed the method exactly varying the amount of time or beeps in-between OFF and ON cycles and nothing changed on my Odometer....

Is there something special I need to be doing to make this work?

My Check Engine Light is still on so I would suspect that a code should appear.... Should I just wipe the Check Engine Light and then wait till it comes on again?

Any ideas on what's going wrong here?

So I wiped the check engine light and went out for a 10 mile drive. I tried to push the engine through some hard tests (full A/C, 2nd gear idle throttle) and such with no luck turning the light on. I guess I will just keep driving her until the light goes on again and then check the code immediately after the light is on.

did the odometer say Pdone or did just nothing happen? turn the key to on, then off 3 times and on the last time leave it in the on position. something should happen on the odomoter if you did it right. either a trouble code or Pdone will appear. Pdone means its not throwing any codes. We should also clear up what kind of truck you have. year, engine, etc, just to make sure.

I'll go outside and try it again. When I go to off position is that the position with the lights off on the dash or the position when you first insert the key.

Also how long should I stay in the on position? Till all the beeps are finished, really quickly, 3 beeps, etc..?

ok I got it to work doing the on/off really quickly. Looks like it was User error. I am now seeing PDone when I do it.
