Default 6speed Manual Transmission Swap

I am a "newbie" on this forum so if i missed a prior thread that describes this subect, my appologies...Also, if there is a DIY article that I am unable to find? tell me to RTFM and please point me to the information.

All that being said, here is my situation.

My Rig:
2000 SLT QuadCab 4.7L NV3500 4x4 3:92LSD, HO cams, induction & Heads, pistons, 70mm BBK TB,Stainless headers, flowmaster 40's, superchips, airraid, 32" BFGoodrich All Terrian.

My issue:
Reverse went out in my transmission and my transfer case chain is knocking around... at 79k miles...:-|

I have been looking around and have found the following:
  • Brand new NV3500 $1450
  • Brand new Dakota Getrag238 $1600+ $500 core
  • Rebuild my NV3500 $1100
  • Used 2002 Dakota 4.7L/4x4 NV3500 w/87k miles $700
  • Used 2008 Ram 4.7L/4x4 Getrag238 w/24k miles for $700
I am interested in the Getrag238 6speed, either new or from the Ram.

I have the follwing questions:
  • 2008 Ram Getrag238
    • I assume the Ram Getrag238 will bolt up to Dakota 4.7L?
    • Can you reuse the NV3500 shifter linkage?
    • If not? do I need Dakota specific Getrag238 linkage?
    • Does the Ram Getrag238 transmission line up with the Dakota's crossmember?
    • Does the Ram Getrag238 bolt up to the Dakota's NP 231D transfer case?(which I am rebuilding as well)
    • Does the Ram Getrag238 have the same size ouput shaft as the NV3500?
    • If not? what transfer case would be recommended? (since I am rebuilding my transfer case anyway...)
Dakota Getrag238:
The truck has been sitting in my driveway since before Xmas, and have to either tow it out or drive it into the garage and fix the damn thing...no reverse....lol

Needless to say, I am looking to make a purchase by next Friday 3/4 so any information ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ron

DakMan6704, if only it were that simple...I searched google before I decided to post to this forum. I found plenty of Automatic to 5 speed conversions, but no clear and definitive answers to the following basic questions:

Is a 2005 or newer Ram getrag 238 the same as a Dakota Getrag 238? (they have different part numbers???)

Will a Dakota 2005 or newer Getrag238 bolt up to a 2000 Dakota?

I see this isn't a very popular subject here ...lol ???

I dont think anyone has looked into it too much. I search "nv3500 swap getrag 238" and get informative stuff.

The only way to get true cross-numbers might be to go to a trans shop that would know. I expect all numbered items to be the same. But, they may just have diff tail adapters or bell housings, etc....or, if theyre both local, take cardboard and do a template!

    Default Here we go...

I am have purchased a Getrag238 out of an 2008 Ram rollover, 24k miles, cost me $700...

    The truck was a Ram1500 SLT 4.7L/4x4.

I will shall see if the NV3500 to Getrag238 in a 2000 QC Dakota can be done.

    I will keep you posted.

    Default Lots of work....

    Ok, here we go...
I pulled my original NV3500 and transfer case. In looking at the transmissions side by side it looks doable. I jacked the Getrag 238 into position and mounted it up to the engine. That's when I took my measurements and made the decision to NOT go through with it.

No changes required on the following:
    Bellhousing
    Starter
    Clutch
    Flywheel

    Changes required:
Transfercase input spline (Length & # of teeth)
Transfercase shifting likeage (lengthen by 2.8")
    New Transmission crossmember (fabricate)
Relocate transmission mount crossmember (3.8" towards the rear)
    Bought a new Transmission Mount($165 non-refundable - Dodge)
Cut tunnel for shifter (2.4" forward)
    Cannot reuse the console
    Driveshaft (shorten by 3.3")
Run a new slave cylinder line
    New wiring connector (reverse lights)

Call me a whimp, but this is a daily driver and I do not need to fab the truck up that much.

So...if you know anybody that wants a low mileage(24k) 2008 Ram Getrag 238 let me know

    Ron

Ron, I may be interested as I am planning on doing a diesel swap into my newly acquired 2002 QC 4X4 4.7 auto which will require a ton of fabrication anyway. But I am several months away from that, so if you still have it in May let me know.
