Default P0172 Code

My Truck, 2002 3.9 5-speed, is throwing a P0172 Code in the odometer window when i turn the key on and off.

I found this on the forum about that code

P0172 (M) 1/1 Fuel System Rich A rich air/fuel mixture has been indicated by an abnormally lean correction factor.

It had been having a backfiring problem and is a little down on power. When it starts to backfire it looses all power, then after about 10 seconds of flooring it the backfiring stops, it lunges forward and accelerates like normal, after that its happy for the rest of the drive. This happens 1-2 times shortly after I start it.

Anyone have any ideas on what could fix this?

Default P0172

Hope you get a reply as my Dakota 4.7 is doing exactly the same thing! I have seen something about power steering switch leaking and shorting out the o2 sensors? Have you seen that? Cheers, Tim.

try unplugging the front O2 sensor before the cat. see if it stips after that. mine was doing same thing when it was cold with that code and i had to replace o2 sensor
