Keeps throwing p1281??!?
My truck was having overheating problems and ended up being the clutch fan, replaced it and then truck started throwing the p1281 code which is engine cool to long. I switched out the aftermarket 180 tstat I had installed this summer with a factory 195 and when cruising down the highway the check engine light will flash and when I check the codes I still get the p1281! The truck is running right below 210 were it should be and I e tried unhooking the battery to reset it. But still no luck. The truck kinda sputters on the highway then the CEL flashes, which I think it's the. Computer trying to fix the temp problem but that is he only code I get. Any ideas? It's in an 01 Dakota sport 4x4 with the 5.9 about a month ago I also had the water pump replaced and did the spark plugs yesterday along with the clutch fan and new 195 tstat

That's what I used to pull the code, I waited till I got home and did the key trick. We're should I start in looking for a misfire?

The temperature sensor that the gauge uses is the same one that the PCM uses so it's unlikely it's failed. Still, double check that the connector is clean and tight.
How are the plugs, cap, rotor? A "sputter" is usually a fuel problem. How's the fuel rail pressure? How many miles on the truck?
It's really odd you aren't throwing a code for a cylinder misfire though.
