What fluid did you use?

The NV3500 is not an easy transmission to rebuild. You'll easily spend a couple of hundred on the overhaul kit alone.

It's doubtful that the shift tower is causing this.

Check a boneyard. http://www.car-part.com

I used pennzoil synchromesh. It was the only thing I could even find in town that said it would work for this tranny. I called the Dodge dealer about the special NV3500 fluid and they didn't even have enough of that to sell me. But then I noticed that the front label of the pennzoil synchromesh had the product # for the Chrysler stuff on it and said it was a direct replacement.

I didn't really see any difference in 1st-5th gears. And of course, reverse is still gone...

The Pennzoil syncromesh would be fine.

Sorry Newbie. It's more than likely going to need a teardown or replacement.

Can a shift fork replacement be a DIY type of a job? Will I need any specialty tools or knowledge above and beyond being mechanically inclined?

You need to split the case. It could be a bearing problem too.

In any event if you were going that far you'd be better off doing a complete overhaul. For that you need some special tools.

If you download the FSM's you'll see what's involved in tearing down the NV3500.

Check this thread: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...-download.html

Use the '00 manual as there isn't one for your '99. The manual comes as a .rar but you can download the utility to convert it to .pdf for free.

Well, I got the shifter taken off yesterday just to rule out anything simple or cheap. I guess I'll be having some fun here in the next few days...

Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it.
