Default terrible acceleration

Hey guys, so my wifes '97 dakota extended cab automatic 4x4 with the 318, it runs and idles fine. When up to speed though, kinda anything over 30, it has absolutely no power or acceleration. Once you do get up to speed its fine. It also makes a humming sound the more you hit the gas at higher speeds. At idle it doesnt do it which leads me to think that its the torque converter or a tranny problem.

Does it shift down when you press the gas after 30? Like say half throttle.

A humming sound may be trans related. Have you checked the fluid? It is red or a brownish-black burned?
