You might get an idea if the valve isn't up all the way but really, you'll find out for sure when you pull the head. There might be some damage to the top of the piston but probably nothing serious, just polish it out.

How does the rocker arm and cam lobe look? It wasn't an oiling problem was it?

The valve looks like it's all the way up. The rocker arm and the cam lobe look as "ok" as my uneducated eyes can see; it's extremely shiny, mirror-like, no rough spots or chips/damage to it that I can see right now.

Any idea what this means? A lot of the car parts searches online ask me whether my 4.7l is "front carrier mounted LH rear cylinder block."

The front differential is partially supported by the engine mounts and a "pinion nose bracket". So you do have the the "front carrier mounted to the LH rear cylinder block."

The blocks are not different just the mounts.

What oil were you using?

Synthetic or old school it looks like you used one or the other at times or an oil blend

An engine flush may have prevented the break down as the lifters tend to get mucky over time that's why the 4.7 tosses lifter arms the lifters start sticking. That head looks a little mucky

How often did you change the oil?
