Default Whole truck shaking

I just bought a 2002 dodge dakota; and most of the time it's fine, but some times when I'm at a complete stop it will start shaking violently, and I'll smell burning oil/gas, and in order to get it to stop, I have to shift it back into park, and turn it off, and turn it on again, I've brought it to several mechanics, and they all tell me they can't find anything wrong. I was wondering if any of you could help me, thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

When it starts shaking is the check engine light on? What happens when you just put it in park, before you turn it off.

What engine do you have?

Default V6 magnum engine

When I shift it out of drive, it stops shaking; but it starts back up once I shift it back into drive or reverse. And yes the check engine light is on

It's the 3.9.

First try this to read the codes. With the engine OFF, turn the key to RUN (don't start it), then back to OFF, back to RUN, back to OFF, then LEAVE IT in RUN.

Any codes will display in the odometer window.

I'm thinking you have a lockup clutch or solenoid problem in transmission. The codes may help narrow it down.

Well, you have a bad O2 sensor for one thing. 2/1 heater failure.

That's the upstream one on the passenger side. Don't use Bosch our trucks hate them. NTK or Denso are the OEM suppliers.

Default oxygen sensor

That isn't what's causing the shaking though is it?

Probably not. It can cause idle problems though.

Normally if it was a misfire it would trip a code for that.

Does it feel like the truck wants to keep going when it starts shaking, like a manual transmission in gear?

Not that I recall; I had my foot on the brake the first time, but it's strange it still does it; but not nearly as violent
