Rack and Pinion
Had a clunking noise in my steering column, went to the local Dodge Dealer, said it was the rack along with the u-joints that were making the sounds. They claim that Dodge now makes them longer so to avoid this problem. They said it would be $800.00 to fix but they wouldn't if they were me because it did not pose a safety issue. Noise and clunking feeling are annoying but I need to know if anyone else has experienced this problem. I have a 2005 Durango 5.7 Adventurer. What would you do?

As long as there are no worn parts, you might elect to live with the noise. For me though, I would not take that route and would get a second opinion.
If both inspections agree, I would either DIY or have it done by an independent shop. The U joints they refer to are probably the sector shaft. They can wear out, and you might find that replacingit takes care of it all.
