Default Transmission upgrade?

Ok tranny is acting kind of funny and I do not doubt may need replacement in a few months. Are there any upgrade options for our vehicles? Just wondering so I can start shopping around!

TIA,

How do you know it isn't a bad sensor? If the transmission is failing then it is purely due to neglect as the transmissions used in the Durango is a tank.

You are kidding right? First off you don't know anything about how the truck is driven or even used, second off I am not looking for trouble shooting tips. I want to replace the darn thing.

I think what Moparman is trying to say is that the 545RFE trans in your Durango is known to be a pretty tough piece.
Your comment that you" just want to replace it" makes one
wonder why?

The majority of the folks here can help you keep your oem system going.

Are you wanting to put in a manual trans, or a beefier auto unit?

One of the things we constantly run into on these forums are folks who ask for answers, but provide little to nothing about their vehicle and usage mode.

Kudos to you for posting your engine option in your sig.

How many miles on your D, and what DO you use it for?

There might be an aftermarket trans available (I am not aware of it). Unless you have a very specific requirement that is really hard on the trans it is possible you have a bad sensor or might need a fluid/filter change.

What exactly is your trans doing or not doing?

My apologies if I offended anyone...108K miles, wifes daily driver. Pretty much every morning it dies on her when she backs out of the driveway to drop the kids off at school..at first I thought it was the temps as it seemed to only do it on cold days. Lately it is doing it every day and yesterday it would not start after dying twice just putting it in gear (R). No check engine and no codes. Checked the fluid and it was about a quart low so refilled it. Tranny fluid change about 5K ago, with oil change, tuneup, throttle body cleaning, belt replacement, etc...

Sounds like a bad sensor to me. Though I'm not sure what it is called so I will wait for someone who has more transmission experience to chime in.

master tech is the resident transmission expert on this site. You could PM him for advice.

Thanks for the informative reply.

Three things come to mind.

#1. How new is your battery? These Durangos do really weird things including stall when the battery is weak or failing.
Unless it is brand new, have it load tested to verify it has the guts to do the job.
If it is more than 4 years old, I would replace it just to eliminate future issues.

#2. Since you recently had the tranny serviced (good move), did this stalling start to occur after that service.
There was an issue with some of the oem sump filters where they crack over time and allow the system to starve for fluid which can result in stalling.

If they installed a new filter during the service (hope so), they might have not installed it correctly which again can cause stalling.

#3. I also recall a TSB put out that concerned either programing the PCM or the TCM which until remedied could result in stalling.

This ought to give you some things to chew on LOL!

I believe in the "Pay it Forward" program.
I also enjoyed the movie.

#1 Battery is new in December from Costco.
#2. It has always stalled on occasion since new, which leads to #3 Yes it has been reflashed and at one point seemed to run a bit better.

This is my third change, I do them myself, so I would assume that it has been done correctly...2 filters and fluid!

What I did for now is reset the pcm, added half a quart to the tranny and see what happens. I will be out of town for a week so hopefully nothing goes wrong!

Thanks,
Art
