Default Squealing...Please Help!

This problem has been going on for about a month now, and seems to be getting worse...

When I am driving and turn the wheel to the right or left something is making a squealing noise in the front end. I believe that its coming from the tire area. This noise only happens when I am moving, while idle I can turn the steering wheel and its fine. Anyone have a clue to what is going on here?

Thanks!

If the squeal only occurs when moving it might be a wheel bearing, though that would sound more like a rumble or hum. Have you checked the tension on the belt or the fluid level?

I have the exact same problem on my 2004 Intrepid. It squeals from a stop and intermittent at low speeds. when driving around a parking lot and turning the wheel to the left it squeals while turning. It sounds like its coming from the front right wheel. I replaced the front brakes and problem still occurs. Its not a hub bearing the wheels have no play in them so it is not a hub assembly. I dont know if its do to rust on the rotors or what. I dont see anything rubbing behind the wheels. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Same problem with my 2002 ES. Doesn't happen all the time: Lst owner warned me about it, and thought it might be the steering rack (he threw in a rack with the car).

Since it only happens from time to time, and I only notice the sound at low speeds, I'm not anxious to replace the rack unless I'm sure. Sorry I have nothing more definitie 04, but I'll keep you updated.

Just caught your post man.

The first thing to check would be your belt. The squeaking from the stop, low speeds, and slow turning all points to the belt. First take a physical look at the belt and see if it is wearing thin anywhere. Then take your fingers and lift on the belt and see if it is tight. Not tight to the point that it doesn't move, but you should only be able to really flex the belt about an inch or so. If it flexes anymore than that or has a sticky rubbery feel to it, then it will need to be replaced.

Hi Intrepid04, Just a FYI the hub bearings in these vehicles can go bad without any noticable movement. The way that they are constructed are totally different from hub and wheel bearings of the past. They can go bad but still maintain decent functionability for a while. This helps prevent catastrophic failure at high temps and speeds.

You will see many posters who will suggest the standard wheel tests like checking the wheel for movement, and lifting the wheels off the ground and putting the car in gear and check for a sould. All of those are good tests, but these hubs will past most of those test due to the compact nature of their assembly.

Now this does not hold true in every case of a chrysler wheel hub bearing assembly, but do not overlook it just because there is no noticible play in the wheel.
