Question Gear shifter will not shift into gears, please HELP!

Oh no! I drove my 1999 Dodge Intrepid to work, and once I was in a parking spot, I tried to shift back into "Park" - noticed it went into "reverse", NOT park.

The n I tried going into park, no response, it goes through all gears, without engaging in any. Since I turned the car off, and placed the emergency brake on, I tried to restart, but since it never went into "Park" I can't get her to start.

Is my shifter bad? Is it a rack & pinion? Transmission? Anyone else heard of this?

Ok, ended up going to the dealership -make sure if it happens to you, get the right shift cable, either column, or floor - they sold me a floor. I wasn't happy, because I had it 99% installed and realized the difference was the tip connector to the column. So, the job is not too hard, but I recommend two jack stand or a lift, if you can get it. The shop manual cover shift cable replacement, and there are some hard to get to spots underneath the bottom. The firewall grommet is tricky, if you have other wires going through it, like I did with my viper alarm system. Since I disconnected the break lines at the master cylinder to for interference removal, I had to bleed the brakes once complete. If anyone wants details or pictures, e-mail me at torsiondrummer2002@yahoo.com, and I'll explain it all. I'd would of rather done 10 brake jobs and 5 oils changes, vice one shift cable replacement, but since the part was 100.00, I probably saved hundreds in labor and other dealer add on’s!
