I missed an engine ground when doing the transmission work, and boy did the car not like that! All I saw was a puff of smoke from the engine bay from inside the car. Thankfully, all it did was somehow instantly drain my battery, but yeah. They are important. I think (perhaps hope?) most people are simply saying it isn't important where it is grounded, but that it is.
