Default 2005 Neon door ajar

Hello world! I recently bought a 2005 Dodge Neon that was a salvage title (starting to regret it), and currently am dealing with an issue where the door ajar light on the dash is always on. I'm guessing this is do to a hit that the car took to it's front right door that totaled the car. This issue causes the dome light to be on constantly and run down the battery. I've disconnected the dome light for now, but would like to figure out what is causing the sensor to always be on.

I've been attempting to do research as to figure out what the mechanism is in the door that signals when it's closed or open, but I am having very little luck when it comes to this specific car. I believe I'm looking for a door switch or jam, or something that is part of the door latch, but I could be completely wrong.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

The wire on the door check strap might be broken:

The connector comes off of the actual door jamb latch mechanism:

Wow, thanks for the really quick reply!

I should be able to access that by removing the door panel, correct?

Well I'm really wishing I would have taken pictures. But I took off the panel, and was surprised to find a plastic, barely transparent sheet covering the entirety of the door, not on the panel. Because of this, I couldn't actually see the sensor that was in your pictures. I cut the sheet where it looked like the sensor was, and found it. It looked in tact, but I wasn't able to get a good look at it, because it was connected to a small black box above it, and it wouldn't pull out. The box and the sensor would move maybe a fourth of an inch up and down, but not out of the lip of the door edge and into the opening.

Any other suggestions? Or maybe just a way to disable the sensor, so that it always thought the door was closed, regardless of whether it's open or not?

Thanks again for the help!

First a correction: the door check strap isn't where this wire is. It is on the door jamb latch. But yeah, that black "outline" on my door was where I pulled back that sheet. The sensor is attached to the door jamb latch.

If you remove the two T30 bolts holding the latch assembly to the door, you can move it out and easily get to the switch connector.
