Default Limited RPMs

I have a 2004 Neon R/T. It has 205K miles and the check engine light comes on sometimes and it will limit my rpms to around 2200, i have a manual and can down shift and it will go over the 2200 but once i press the gas it won't let me go past that point. I can restart my car and it will go back to normal but this happens randomly. Everytime ive took it to my mechanic, the light is never on and he doesn't know what it is. Any answers would help.

almost sounds like the limp mode in the automatics... mine(auto) behaved similarly when the cam position sensor was going bad. the first time it triggered a code, i was on the highway, and it wouldn't go above 2nd gear, or 55 mph.

buy or borrow a code scanner, and just leave it plugged in. next time it triggers the CEL, pull the code.

It should have the code stored so you should be able to read it with a compatible scanner. You might need a Chrysler-specific scanner. Your mechanic doesn't check fault codes when you take your car in?

The CEL doesn't have to be on to pull a code. You might check and see if there are any stored codes. I've seen posts about the camshaft position sensor being bad and causing a 2,200 RPM limit on manual transmission Neons.
