I just purchased (yesterday!) a 2005 Neon SXT. I read the manual for break in, but I want your guys opinion about break in. Should I change the oil at around 1000 miles? or let it be until the 3,000 mark?
I looked at the TSB briefly, Should I take my Neon to the dealer and request they be looked at?
It's a 2005 SXT, 5 speed, power windows, locks, cruise control, etc etc. oh, and Orange Blast paint, It's a pretty nice car for the money.
Got it on the big sale they had for the Neons.
Any help or advise for this DIY would be great.
Thanks
Aaron

When I bought my 2005 Dodge SX 2.0, which I believe is the same or similar to the U.S. SXT, the service department told me break-in was around 20,000kms, which seemed quite high to me. They also told me my gas mileage would improve around that time and I am just under that now and I have noticed a significant improvement in mileage. They never mentioned about changing the oil at an early interval...just the normal 5000kms. Congrats on the new car!!

Yeah that does seem kinda high...i would assume average break-in time is anywhere from 2,000-6,000miles (3200km-9600km)...and yes the SX 2.0 is the SXT.
But what i found interesting was in the owners manual of our 06 Magnum R/T the break-in time is only 500-1000 miles...interesting...
The manual says 300 miles for break in, I changed the oil on my '97 Kia Sephia at 1,000 then 3,000 after that, and the Ex Wife still has it and it runs great, actually I had a couple of mechanics say it runs really good for a Kia. Yours truly had to pay it off and never got to drive it after the divorce[:'(]. Oh well, the kids had a decent car for them to ride in.
I think I will change the break in oil at around 1,000 then again at 3,000 and run synthetic after that. The manual says so run 5/20 yikes, thats thin. Hopefully Mobil one makes a 5/20 synthetic.
Thanks for input guys, I sure like the car and will visit here often to see about things. Except my Fiance will more than likely take it from me, after she is the one that found it on the internet. Shame they aren't making them anymore. Good for pricing though
Later
Aaron

I never even checked the owners manual to see what it says about break-in. Obviously its a little late now but I will just for interest sake.

That mileage is just like the old days...you weren't supposed to go over 60mph (metric came to Canada in '76) for the first 1000 miles. I guess some things haven't changed that much. Saying that, cars are a LOT better built then they were back then....thank goodness!!
But i guess theres two kinds of "Break-in" periods...the first being the break-in time till you can floor it from a dead stop, and the second would be when your engine begins to get better gas mileage. Like it says 500 miles to break in the 5.7 HEMI but DCX (and other 5.7 owners) says to expect a leap in gas mileage around 10,000 miles or so...
Break in period is short but will continue to break in and have your milage improve over the next 10,000 miles or so. Mobil1 does come in 5W20 and 0W20 both of which are perfectly acceptable in the 2005 cars.
Basic theory is to flow more oil past a given point instead of having a thick oil sitting there. But hey even ford still has engines that must use 5W30 or engine damage will occur. 4.0 L in mustang and explorers for example. For the rest (gas) 5W-20 seems OK though. Folks 500 and Focus run great on it.

mobil one does make a synthetic 5w20...I just picked up some as Im soon to be getting an oil change. Im going to go straight synthetic to to try and squeeze a few more MPG....Hell cant complain though Im averageing about 28 to 32 MPG and thats mainly in town. Congrats on the car though.
