I need a new rear end in my '01 Dodge Ram 1500. The Dodge dealership estimated $1600. Another mechanic said they didn't include some parts needed and it would really be more like $2000. He said he could do it for $1400 ($950 for a used rear end from junk yard + labor & oil). But he wants to change it to a "non positive traction". He told me the rear end from the junk yard is $950. Another mechanic got a price from a junk yard of $450! Or he could probably fix it for $350, depending on what he finds when he opens it, but even if it needs a new ring and pinion it should be under $500. He also says you don't need a dial indicator to install, and the expensive mechanic says you do. I'm a girl and don't know anything and who to believe. Help!

That being said, I'd go with the under $500 one ... if he'll guarantee it.

I need to replace my transmission crossmember, cushion/rear support on my 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD Club Cab. I snagged a stump and bent it back a bit. It appears simple enough? Support Vehicle on jack stands, support transmission, remove crossmember, cushion/rear support ? There may be a few minor tasks I left out but I wanted to be brief. I would like to know if there is anything major/critical I should know. I found a crossmember at a local auto salvage yard, but having a time finding the rear support/cushion. The cushion has broke apart between where it attaches to the crossmember and rear support. I may can "glue" this back together temporarily while attaching the rear support back to the transmission and the crossmember to the cushion/rear support.
I have a 2000 with the 5.9 and I have taken the oil pan out with the motor in the truck. Taking it out is the easy part putting the thing back in can be a little tricky, the starter kinda gets in the way but if you have the patience it can be done. I did have the motor mounts loose when I did it, don't know if you can do it with them tight. I have also heard of people putting a jack on the tranny and lifting it a bit, I would be careful doing this so you don't put to much torque on the engine and tranny.

I pulled my oil pan out without doing anything to the motor. Mine is a manual though. The toughest part was getting it past the tranny, the lip of the pan drags along side it.

remove the fan shroud(or just unbolt it and let it sit on fan), remove long bolts from motor mounts, jack engine at harmonic balancer. watch to make sure you don't cruch anything or pull any wires or hoses. when installing, watch oil pickup, don't bend it.
off ya'lls topic. for the DIY i would love to see a detailed go over of how to put a CB in fully. Cause i have never seen it dont, nor do i know the slightest thing. i got a magnant mount antenna so my antenna line is just gonna kinda be there. i know where i want it to. just with wiring and such idk. if someone could do a video to that would be good. it wouldnt just help me ether. and it would be great to have someone who did it on a dodge show how b.c obviously thats what i have. and i am a noob to cars and such. i love em to death, just havent grown up with someone who knows, or did stuff to em. they always pay someone. im the opposite. i like to do stuff like that.
thanks.
