Probably so. Yours is probably bad too HAHA...

MPG's are such a relative thing anymore. How they are calculated, what speeds,, RPMs, etc. There are a lot of different variables. So for me it's mostly just to track any sudden change. Now I get 12.5mpg on the carb'd engine.

The most inaccurate way to calculate is to watch the indicator on the overhead console...

Unfortunately, I know exactly what he means. My wife's cousin has a 2000 Ram with the 5.2, and when I asked him what mileage he got, I got a blank stare, then "um, I think I can go almost 400 miles on a tank?"
It's not rocket science, divide miles travelled by gallons of fuel used = miles per gallon. If you get something like .076, you did it backwards. The only variable might be trying to correct your odometer for a different tire size, which I don't bother with. The roughly 4% difference with my setup is only about half a mile per gallon.

I'm hoping he is referring to the many variables that can effect gas mileage, not actually calculating mileage....there is nothing variable about straight math. People are just too lazy to properly "calculate" MPG's and go off the display (if equipped), which does vary greatly sometimes. The one on my Dak was always off compared to a hand calculation, sometimes less, sometimes more. I used the overhead MPG display as a reference only and considered it another "idiot light" so to speak.

I calculate the same way that is used in that article. Fill it up full, write down the odo, driver at least 50 miles, fill up full, figure out the miles traveled and the gallons used, and divide them. There ya go...

 

Problem is i am too poor to fill my tank up. I just put enough gas in to go whatever i am going and back. Haha

 

I fill my tank up all the way simply because I don't have a working fuel gauge and I can't risk running out of fuel

 

I agree with HamBone. I filled up one time, it was like $100! Luckily, it's not my daily driver.
