torque specs for spindle nut
What are the torque specs for the spindle nut...I have the service manual from the merry christmas link but it says 185 ft/lbs and that seems way too much or am I reading something wrong? (all info in sig)
INSTALLATION
(1) On models with all-wheel antilock system
(ABS), check condition of tone wheel on hub/bearing.
If teeth on wheel are damaged, hub/bearing assembly
will have to be replaced (tone wheel is not serviced
separately).
(2) Slide the hub/bearing onto the spindle.
(3) Install the
new hub/bearing nut and tighten
to:

LD 1500: 251N·m (185 ft. lbs.)
²
HD 2500/3500: 380 N·m (280 ft lbs.)

NO NO NO NO NO.
2wd 2000 and later models have the unitized bearing that is non-servicable and torques to 185 lb.
1999 and earlier 2wd have plain old packable bearings.
from Haynes manual...
20. place hub assy onto spindle and push packed outer brg into position.
21. install washer and spindle nut, tighten slightly, no more that 12 ft lb.
22. spin hub in forward direction and tighten to approx 20 ft lb to seat brg and remove excessive grease.
23. loosen spindle nut 1/4 turn, then using fingers only, tighten until snug. install nut lock and cotter pin. if nut lock slot does not line up, remove it (nut lock) and rotate is around till it aligns.
24. bend cotter pin.
25. install dust cap.
26 install caliper
27 install wheel.
28 grasp top and bottom of tire and try to move wheel in and out on the spindle. there should be no movement. spin each wheel, should be no noise, resistance, or freeplay.

NO!!
I learned the hard way. I found a site online, before I looked here, and found that it said 185 ft lbs 1994-2001. I have a 1998 2wd. I was able to make it 10 miles before the bearings seized up and the tire nearly came off the truck. I am lucky. I replaced everything, after having to cut the old bearing case off the spindle, and torqued the new spindle nut to 20 ft lbs. Works perfect now.

The 185 ft-lbs is for the 2 wheel drive sealed hub bearing nut, which is on the rear. The front spindle nut is to be torqued @ 20 ft-lbs to seat the bearings, then backed off 1/4 turn, and re-tightened BY HAND ONLY until it's snug. Then you put the nut lock and cotter pin on, then the dust cap. I hope this will be helpful to someone.
