Default 2WD to 4WD Conversion

Is it possible to convert a 2wd 96 Ram 1500 (extended cab, longbed, 360 Magnum) automatic to a 4x4? I understand that I'd need to swap the entire drivetrain, but can it be done? If I had a wrecked 4x4, would the parts bolt up to the 2x4 chassis?

yes it is possible. but very time consuming. youd prolly have to make some extra cuts to make some stuff fit but im sure it can be done. if you go for it, im sure there are some people who could benefit from a walkthrough.

it CAN be done. pick up any 4 wheel and off road magazine, jeep magazine, etc, and i'm sure there'll be something in there about doing it. if you have a similarly equipped (wheelbase & motor) donor vehicle that you don't want to/ can't drive, then it can be done. you'd have to swap everything on the front end, everything behind the tranny (tailshaft, transfer case, driveshaft), possibly the exhaust, front axle, upper and lower control arms, front suspension, front hubs, etc...

it's a royal pain in the badonkadonk, but it can be done. anything that you put your mind to can be done. it might not be easy, but nothing worth it ever is. can't tell ya how many times my pastor's told me "Faith moves mountains", so i'd imagine with a little good ol' fashioned american ingenuity swapping a driveline shouldn't be that big a deal, all things considered. just so you know what you're getting into...

theres a few brackets on the frame of the 4wd compared to the 2wd that are not on the 2wd frame, i dont know if theres a wayaround them but you godda cut stuff and weld stuff, lol change the tranny, and a complete front end conversion including inner fender wells which involves pulling the whole front clip apart because the 2wd is independant front end suspension.
