Tach wire?
#11
Got some 1/4" wire loom, and some wire. Ran that over to the drivers side following the other looms. Tap spliced into the accel coil adapter wire. Ran the wire into the truck and hooked it up. Once I get some dirt on it, it will look like it was ment to be there. Tried to program the box for the tach but I guess it didn't work as on my way home I tried to test it and it still did the same thing. I couldn't tell the truck started. Looks like I'll have to mess with it tomorrow when I have some time. Least the hard part is done.

Yep... so it didn't work. Tried to reprogram again via the instructions... still nothing. I took a volt meter (DC) and tested the tach wire I just ran and I think I got around -5v or so I think. Means it is at least getting something. Im going to break open the instruction manual again and look.... but is there something simple I missed?

To anyone in the future looking for aftermarket tach installation info...
Looking for a tach wire from the powertrain control module (PCM) may be a lost cause. I have a '95 ram 318 (5.2L) with the low-line instrument cluster (no tach). A lot of guys assume that the necessary wires will be in the harness regardless, but that is not the case. On my truck, the tach wire pin at the PCM is blank (wire 43)... it has a plastic plug in the pin... no wire in the harness.
Use the coil, neg.
Good luck.

Earth to dbbd1...
Note how I said, "To anyone in the future...". These forum posts come up as google search results. He wasn't the first person to install an aftermarket tach in a gen2 Dodge Ram, and I sure will not be the last. The post may save the next guy some hassle.
