Thanks guys for all your help. I've been coming home late due to work so I have not had time to at least remove the o2 sensors to see if that improves anything. I didn't want to remove the shackles because if I do that, I would want to just take the whole thing off and either replace the cats or gut it out. I'll try the gas cap idea tonight for sure though. That seems easy enough. Thanks again guys!
I live in Cali, as long as you make sure it's 50 state legal, your good. I switched my busted stock cat for a magnaflow 4 years ago and haven't had any problems with the test only stations.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe they've "upped the ante" even more since then, haven't they? Increased regulations and laws even more on that kind of stuff?
Magnaflows were 50 state legal for a bit, last year IIRC, and now if you look on Summit's website, they are only 49 state legal.

Not sure, it probably is just more restricting (better "filtering" of the exhaust) for emissions purposes. Or it may be just a certification issue.
I had the same exact problem with my truck - it wound up being the ignition coil. I too went through troubleshooting the cats before replacing the coil.
Hey guys, I hope y'all can help me. I have a 2001 Ram Sport with the 5.9 and won't seem to rev past about 4K rpms and just backfires. I checked the plug wires and they all seem to be connected correctly although I only assumed the cap connections are correct. Any ideas?
i have a 1996 ram sport 1500 with the 5.9 and im having the same problem a few people told me to change the intake gaskets so i did and i still have the same problem i hope someone can help us!
I pulled all the plugs and checked out ok. I replaced the coil since it was the cheaper option but it wasn't the problem. I finally pulled the cats to take a peak and it was partially clogged.
