4wd not engaging

Something occurred to me today. What would happen if the vacuum tubes got switched? I'm pretty sure it's not the problem, since my 4x4 went out when I was off roading, but I had a place drop my tranny. This happened after my 4wd went out, but before I started troubleshooting the problem. If I get in the mood, I'll try swapping the lines and see what happens.

I know. The driveshaft locks into the t-case when engaged in 4, so i know it's not the problem. Either the axle or CAD system is the problem. Maybe this weekend I'll have time to see if I can move the collar by hand.

I still haven't tried to move the collar by hand, but I think I might have actually bent the axle. How would I tell?
In the morning, when I get on the freeway I hear a noise that sounds like offroad tires whining. It starts quiet, gets louder, then subsides. It does it between 3 and 10 times, then stops. I don't hear it again until the next morning, when I pull onto the freeway.

since you've verified your t-case is switching vac properly, and turning the front drive shaft properly. and you've verified the vac lines are good. and you've verified that the shift fork moves back and forth when the CAD is removed from the truck...
then the next step in how things work is the engagement of the collar.

Any ideas about the noise I'm getting? Is it probably a bearing?
