Default 1997 2500 late shifts

i have a 1997 2500 V10 4wd and from 1st to 2nd gear it will not shift unless i lift off the throttle till it engages 2nd gear, after that its fine, goes into OD and tq converter locks up fine, its just the 1 2 shift. the truck has 136K miles on it? is it just time for a new tranny?

Best bet would probably be to call them. You want to get parts for a 2001. That is what your computer is expecting. (there may be connector issues there, but, I am not sure on that.)

You have a locking torque converter. Non-lockups were extremely rare after about the mid 80's...... I don't think there were any....

Unhappy shifting issues

I searched thru the thread and couldnt find anything that resembled my issue, so I thought I would ask.

I started having shifting issues on the way to and from my local VW club meeting. The truck shifts from 1 to 2 fine, but then it climbs upwards of 55 mph and 4k rpm before it will even attempt to shift into 3rd and after driving in 3 for a while the o/d light comes on and it will not even shift to 3. I was driving on the freeway with no way to get off at an exit when this first started happening and after about 20 seconds the trans temp light came on. When I got to the meeting I let the truck cool off for about an hour and a half, then attempted to drive it to the house, about 20 miles. I took the back roads this time, and until the trans got warmed up really well, about 10 miles, it shifted fine, but after that it would only shift from 1 to 2, and then the o/d light came on again.

I checked the codes like it suggested in other posts in this thread, and the only codes I get are ones for the o2 sensors, which is related to a plenum gasket issue that I already knew about. This is my wifes daily driver, so it has to be fixed asap so she can get to work.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone is able to offer with my issues.

Gene

Been reading up about removing the OD unit and replacing the snap ring. I'm not sure I want to tackle the actual snap ring replacement and might consider removing it and taking it to a shop. I see it talks about having an alignment tool to keep the splines aligned. If I don't have this alignment tool, how easy is it to knock the splines out of alignment.? Could I take the chance and do it without it if I am careful? Or do you not recommend doing it without the tool?

Hey, heyyou or monte, what's the gm sensor solenoid supposed to do exactly? Is it for extending trans life or improving shifts/driveability? My trans was rebuilt about 15k miles ago. Shifts well enough, but does not like to come out of lockup unless you really lay into the throttle. Will also jump from 2nd to 1st at partial throttle (a bit too sensitive). Tv cable is adjusted per factory specs, thinking the gps may need changing anyway, since its the original with 147k miles (was not replaced when trans rebuilt). Will this conversion help at all with that? Sorry to butt in, but thanks.

Youre going to need the black plastic square one, the other is a metal round one.

And ya, if the truck is moving you have the correct torque converter, lock up and all.

Sounds like the second gear band is gone. Common on the 47re.
