Default Transmisson isues when cold

well on my 97 ram 1500 with the 5.9l 4x4, the transmission doesnt want to shift when its cold. whats weird is its fine once the truck is at operating temp. in order for the truck to shift it has to go untill it redlines than it will shift. and also the other day it was cold i was coming up a hill and it keept switching from passing gear to not till i was over the hill. anything i can do to fix this? or should i be prepared to drop some serrious cash on a rebuild

Thanks
