If that looks ok, grab yourself a filter and gasket kit, and six quarts of ATF +4. Drop the pan, and while you are in there, have a look at the governor pressure sensor, and solenoid. Clean them out, or replace them.... adjust bands, and reassemble. See if that improves its attitude any. If it doesn't.... start saving your pennies for the trans rebuild.

Welcome to DF.
Are they hard to replace..

Not really, just messy. (that's why a lot of folks here also recommend getting a drain plug.)

I guess they are up inside when you drop the pan. Also is there any way to get more of the fluid out other then whats in the pan. THX

If you have an automatic transmission, you have a locking converter.

Default Shift linkage?

I have a 98 dodge ram and went to go to work this morning and it wouldn't go into gear. It's an automatic transmission and as I grabbed the shift lever and put it into gear it felt different. The lever on the steering column moves (and feels like the cable is moving but nothing is engaging. Please help.

There is no cable. Get another person and open the hood and see if the linkage under /near the brake booster move's when you move the shift lever. If it does not, you need an entire steering column. If it does, then get under the truck and see what is disconnected.

Linkage underneath. Bolt probably loosened (or rusted...)
