Can I just use a regular 1/8 inch threaded plug from a hardware store?

Shouldn't be a problem, check it after a couple days and make sure it's not leaking or coming loose.

When it comes to installing it, make sure it's firm but DON'T CRANK DOWN ON IT. You'll strip the heck out of the aluminum thread.

i'd also wrap it in a little teflon tape to prevent it from seizing. as said - just snug it.
