multiple rapid clicks, like clickity-clickity-clickity-click, coming from under the hood - the sound is coming from the starter relay, when there is not enough power getting to the starter relay to hold it closed. the rapid clicks are the starter relay closing/opening, closing/opening. the solution to this is to charge battery, clean battery cables, clean the ground, etc.

a single, solitary CLUNK, coming from the starter itself, is the sound of the solenoid throwing the bendix/gear thing out to engage the flywheel. then it usually spins, but if you get a CLUNK but no spin, then its a bad starter. our starters are pretty simple. you can get a rebuild kit from ebay or anywhere for just a few bucks with new contacts and maybe the bushing.
