Its a good time to do an oil pump and screen replacement too. Right after a plenum job. A lot of junk can get flushed down there from all the work. Of course the goal is to be as clean as possible but its inevitable working on an old engine to be perfectly clean.
I found old junks of gasket in my pickup screen lol. I guess it did its job though

thanks. ill probly end up doing oil pan down the road (depending on how dirty the plenum job goes lol) just dont have the extra $. i just started on timing & water pump and im going to move onto plenum next while accessory bracket is off already >timing chain was really bad, just tryin to get the gasket surface completely cleaned on cover but certain lil spots wont even scrape with razor blade so need to grab some emery cloth or something >>heard some back & forth about using the small drill type 'flapper wheels' to clean gasket surfaces (lightly of course).. anyone have luck with em or am i best sticking to the ol razor, break cleaner & emery cloth?

chain & case finally on went a lil too 'liberal' with the rtv, didnt want to risk a leak .. hope i didnt overdue it (open to advice/opinions).. old timing: http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag381/baymaven11/100_3954_zpsf68ebd1c.jpg

>>>>on water pump should i also use a light coat of rtv or no sealant? i have been told both ways (new pump came with a gasket but i already had a fel-pro from 'timing gasket kit' so ima use it)

starting to second guess my use of rtv after i started asking & reading around.. seems to be a 50/50 opinion on it -only time will tell but thats what experience is for i suppose lol >>got new water pump in today http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag381/baymaven11/100_3976_zps6748b1cf.jpg
now onto labeling everything & tearing into intake manifold (god i hope i dont have any leaks when i get thru lol)

no havnt done that, oil pans goin to have to wait a bit unfortunately. Thanks for the tip on rtv though, iv sure been using it very thinly on both sides of all gaskets (dont know where i picked that up, a amateur thing i suppose lol) >from what iv read the i.m. just needs a lil black rtv on the rubber 'cross gaskets' like u said & mabe the a dab on the corner of intake gasket.. sound about right? :-D
