I have a 98 Ram 1500 2wd with the tow package which has a limited slip 3.55 gear ratio. I need to rebuild what I have or replace the assembly from a salvage yard due to whining/roar sounds. Trying to do some research and I am getting conflicting results about weather I can use the rear end assembly from a 4wd Ram 1500. Some people say there is a difference between the leaf spring perch height on the axle tubes. I believe I can use the rear end from years 1994-1999 with 2000 and newer 1500's using a different style pinion yoke.
4wd trucks get a block 2wd don't. If they are different it won't be much, take a tape measure with you so you can compare. My perches were about 1/2"-3/4" above the diff tube if that helps you at all. I still have the old ones if you need a exact number for comparison.
Ok thanks, yeah I will be going later this week to look at some rear ends at junkyard/craigslist and will measure then. I believe that should be the only issue if any.
Why not just rebuild the rear end? It could be done for around 600 bucks.. I would rather go that route than a junkyard where you have no clue what you are getting into
