It very well could be. But you would be noticing shifting issues with the truck if you lost bands. Try swapping cases around and if that doesnt improve the noise then you may want to start looking into the transmission. When I was having issues another member here was trying to help me track the issues down. He was on the right course if I remember correctly. Merc225 it was. Just dont want to see someone go through the issues I did and spend that kind of money on transfer cases when it ends up being transmission related

ya well the tranny hasn't acted weird everyonce in a while when its cold and it goes to shift it will shift up then back down really wuickly and it doesn't reall shift hard and I towed with it all summer and it didn't make it better or worse the only thing was the noise started at like 74 but I don't have any spare tcases or anything so that's is kinda an issue to find the problem

Well start cheap like others said. Pull that tailshaft housing off and check the snap ring. If that is intact and hasnt moved then keep moving down the list..

No just use black rtv sealer.

Those pieces you found in the trany pan are for the OD unit, The trany will fail soon, time to R&R it and rebuild it.

Thats what mine ended up being. Guy that bought the truck had the same issue with his and there was an internal issue in the trans. Cant remember exactly what he said it was though..
Really! I wish you could remember what it was, I have not followed up on this for a while.

I guess I just looked over that information.. Then Merc is correct.. Rebuild is in order.

Edit: The converter coming loose is possible I suppose.. Could also just be on the downhill with whatever debris is floating around in there.
